He is in his early twenties, has musical talent and was part of a local church where he was on the praise team. About a year ago, something happened and he and his family left this local church.
I met this young man at Starbucks where he works. Over the past year I learned that he is actively looking for a new church. Every time I see him I ask him if he found a new church.
In our conversations he tells me about new churches he visited. One particular church has an amazing pastor that is able to communicate the biblical truth with passion and power. This young man likes this aspect. However, the musical style seems to be different than his musical taste. Another church had great musical talent, but the leadership is shady.
No, he is not worried. In fact he is going to look some more with the confidence that he will find a church soon.
Yes, I am thrilled that this young man wants to be part of a local church where the truth revealed in the Scriptures is taught with consistency. However, what worries me is that he has never mentioned praying for God’s will and direction concerning a church. Rather, it seems he is going to attend a church that has a certain musical style.
What if God wanted to use someone like him with musical talent in a local church that needs help to improve their musical minis-try?
Maybe it takes a shift in thinking. Maybe we need to move from what I want and what I like to how can I serve. After all Jesus did not come to be served but to serve.
